Church Building

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was With God, and the Word was God." John 1: 1

In the year 1903 Rev. Wesley Hall stood on God's word and organized Friendship Baptist church in a small shabby house near the Southern Railroad tracks. Very few records are available on its organization, but a great deal of information has been passed down from elder members and friends. Although Friendship was a very poor and uneducated church, its members were giving, friendly, helpful and loving.

The church was relocated in 1924 by Rev. H. L. Westbrook to the site it now stands. There was no pool for baptism, we would sing and march across the railroad tracks to a branch to baptize our candidates.

In 1951 Rev. M. R. Hall served as pastor. Rev. W. M. Allen was elected pastor in 1952. Both pastors departed their lives while pastoring here at Friendship. Rev. B. J. Anderson was elected as pastor for a brief tenure and in 1953 Rev. W. T. Jackson served as pastor.

Rev. S. L. Evans was elected pastor in 1954. At that time the floor was shaky and the walls began to lean. Truly, we were afraid to shout and praise God, fearing the floor might fall in. On Sunday mornings we would take an offering to buy coal and wood to start a fire, the heater would smoke so badly we would have to open the windows and doors to let the smoke out. After coming together in prayer, continuing to believe and trust God would bless Friendship in a mighty way. In 1960 our prayers were answered and we embarked upon a new horizon. Truly we knew it was a blessing from God. A new church was being built around the old church. As we toiled and worked day after day removing the debris from the old church, we were blessed to have other ministers and laymen from the area to come and help us. Not only did they help physically, but they gave financial support also. Our thanks went out to Rev. T. B Bowser, Rev. Preston Pendergrass, other ministers and laymen, because they put on their coveralls, rolled up their sleeves and worked side by side with us. They showed love to us when we needed a place for worship. On Sunday mornings, while we were building the new church Mt. Hebron on Columbia Street opened their doors to us for worship. We will be forever thankful and grateful to the Mt. Hebron church family for their kindness and generosity. The building was completed and everyone was thankful and praised God. There were many accomplishments made during those years. Deacons and Trustees were added to the church. New auxiliaries were organized, including the Musical and Junior choirs. We purchased land for a church cemetery on Orr's Road. Rev. S. L. Evans was our pastor from 1954-1968.

In the year 1968 Rev. Earl Lewers was elected as pastor. Great works were still being accomplished. The church body continued working together to purchase a church bus and a baptismal pool was placed inside the church sanctuary. Railings were also placed, in memory of Sister Corine Macon. Rev. Earl Lewers pastored Friendship from 1968-1973.

Rev. L. L. Robertson was elected as pastor in 1973. Rev. Robertson was a man of honor, integrity and strength. Many accomplishments were made in the years he pastored Friendship. The Annex and Sunday school classes were added and completed. The church added more Deacons and Trustees. Additional Auxiliaries were added and more land was purchased for the church cemetery. The land behind the church and across the road was purchased also. In the past, we only had worship services on 1st and 3rd Sunday. 1987 is the year we began having service each Sunday. Truly this has been a blessing from God. Rev. L. L. Robertson served as pastor from 1973-1987.

In December of 1987, Rev. Willie E. Page was elected as our pastor. Through prayer, many great works were achieved at this place called Friendship. The church yard was paved and we paid off the building debt. The pews were padded and covered and the floors were carpeted in the church sanctuary. We renovated the ceiling, the vestibule, new doors were installed and many other things were done to beautify the church. The Annex was dedicated in memory of our deceased members who had worked so hard toward the day this would come to fruition. "Praise God from whom all blessings flow." God has truly showered Friendship with so many, many blessings. We further purchased a new bus, a new intercom system and heating and cooling units. History was yet made again when the first women trustees were installed into the church body. The blessings continued to flow over and over again as God continues to bless us. In the year 2013 the Friendship family after much prayer and supplication sponsored a groundbreaking ceremony as we were about to embark upon a new task. As we now gather for the groundbreaking ceremony Pastor Page, Deacons Tommie Dixon and Joe Davis and Trustees George Mayfield and Timothy Sims each with shovel in hand broke ground for what was soon to be a new education and social facility. The building would facilitate class rooms, large dining/multi-purpose room, and commercial kitchen. God is so good and what we love about it... He's like that all the time. Each new day He shows up and shows out. The year is 2014 and the building is complete. The Friendship family and guess from all around gathered for a grand opening. It was a wonderful celebration, all were thankful to an all giving God who is full of mercy and grace. Pastor Page was elated and joyful as he and the Friendship family was eager to see this task completed and so it was. In March of 2016 our pastor Rev. Willie E. Page suddenly departed this life. He pastored Friendship Missionary Baptist church from 1987-2016...29 years.

In 2017 the church elected Rev. Darryl D. Cunningham as pastor of Friendship. Rev. Cunningham served as pastor from 2017 - 2021.

The FMBC family is currently in search of a pastor. We pray continuously God sends us who He so desires to lead the Friendship flock... God's will for God's people. We currently have many ministries and a very committed and grateful membership who will continue tirelessly in faith and service to our God.

"Every bit of Praise is to our GOD!!!"
